Sealants are coverings made of a plastic material that are applied to checking surfaces on the back teeth (usually molars and premolars) where decay occurs most often. It is recommended to have sealants applied as soon as the permanent teeth grow in to help prevent decay. The deep grooves in the back chewing teeth are more susceptible to decay because they can become a food trap, especially for chewy/gooey foods and candies. Sealants typically hold up well against chewing and will stay intact for several years. Most insurances cover this simple procedure when you’re children are young so having them applied early is beneficial for many reasons.
